What Chemicals and Activities can Damage your Jewellery

Most jewellery owners worry about dramatic accidents. A ring slipping down a drain, a necklace breaking, or a stone falling out of a treasured piece are just some of the things that may come to mind.

In reality, much of the wear jewellery experiences comes from ordinary day-to-day life. The products we use, the hobbies we enjoy, and even some of our daily routines can gradually affect the appearance and condition of precious metals and gemstones.

Household cleaning chemicals that can damage jewellery

One of the biggest culprits is often found under the kitchen sink. Household cleaning products are designed to cut through grease, remove stains and disinfect surfaces, but some can be harsh on jewellery. Bleach, ammonia-based cleaners and other strong chemicals may affect precious metal alloys and certain gemstones. Rings are particularly vulnerable because they are usually the items people forget to remove before tackling a cleaning job.

Can perfume, make-up and skincare products affect jewellery?

Beauty products can also take their toll. You may have noticed a ring looking slightly dull after a few weeks of wear. Quite often, the problem is not damage at all but a build-up of moisturiser, soap, perfume, sunscreen or make-up. These products can leave a film on gemstones and metals that reduces their shine.

Pearls are especially sensitive because their surface is softer and more delicate than many people realise. Applying cosmetics and fragrance before putting jewellery on may help reduce exposure.

Why swimming can be bad for jewellery

Swimming is another activity that jewellers frequently warn about. Chlorine in swimming pools and hot tubs may contribute to tarnishing or discolouration in some metals over time. There is also a more immediate risk: losing a ring altogether.

Cold water can cause fingers to shrink slightly, which may make rings feel looser and increase the risk of them slipping off unnoticed.

Gardening and DIY risks for rings and other jewellery

For those who enjoy gardening, jewellery can face a different set of hazards. Soil contains tiny particles of grit that can scratch metal surfaces, while digging, lifting pots and handling tools increase the chances of knocks and impacts.

Similar risks apply to DIY projects around the home. Decorating a room or assembling furniture may not seem particularly dangerous, but it only takes one sharp knock against a hard surface to leave a mark on a ring or loosen a gemstone setting.

Can exercise and sport damage jewellery?

The gym is another place where jewellery often suffers. Gripping weights, using resistance machines or taking part in sports can place considerable pressure on rings and bracelets.

Over time, repeated impacts and friction may cause scratches, dents or wear to settings that hold gemstones securely in place.

If you have jewellery insurance, check your policy documents before taking valuable items to the gym. Some policies may contain conditions relating to storage, security or unattended items.

Heat, sunlight and temperature changes

Heat and sunlight can also affect some jewellery. Certain gemstones, including pearls, opals and amethysts, may be sensitive to prolonged exposure to strong sunlight or excessive temperatures. More information: Caring for your jewellery in the summer.

How to protect jewellery from everyday damage

None of this means jewellery should be locked away. It is there to be worn and enjoyed. However, being aware of a few common risks can help keep favourite pieces looking their best for years to come.

Taking jewellery off before cleaning, swimming, exercising or carrying out practical jobs is often a simple habit that can prevent unnecessary wear and reduce the likelihood of accidental damage.

If you own jewellery that is valuable or has particular sentimental importance, it may also be worth considering bespoke protection. Assetsure provides specialist jewellery insurance, engagement ring insurance and watch insurance with cover that may protect against risks such as theft, accidental loss and accidental damage, subject to the terms, conditions and exclusions of the policy.
