Nobody wants to see a treasured ring being cut in two, especially if it's an engagement ring, wedding band or family heirloom. But sometimes there is little choice. If your finger becomes badly swollen and the ring won't budge despite attempts to remove it using traditional methods, cutting it off may be necessary to prevent injury. Fortunately, having a ring cut off doesn't necessarily mean it's ruined. Many rings can be repaired, although the options depend on their design and materials. ## Why would a ring need to be cut off? Injuries, arthritis and other causes of finger swelling can leave a previously comfortable ring stuck firmly in place. And a tight ring can restrict blood flow, potentially causing further swelling and injury. If your finger becomes increasingly swollen or painful, stop trying to remove the ring yourself and seek prompt medical advice. If the finger becomes blue, pale, numb or cold, seek urgent medical attention, as circulation may be affected. ### Where can you get a ring cut off? If there is no injury or immediate medical concern, a jeweller may be able to remove a stuck ring. However, if swelling is severe, circulation appears affected or there has been an injury, seek urgent medical assessment rather than waiting for a jeweller. Often, yes. The jeweller will examine the ring to establish whether the band can be joined again or needs additional work. It may, depending on the circumstances and your policy. Some specialist jewellery insurance policies typically may include accidental damage cover, which can help towards repairing or replacing damaged jewellery following an insured incident. However, a ring being deliberately cut off for medical reasons is not automatically covered.
