A ring slipping down a drain, a necklace breaking, or a stone falling out of a treasured piece are just some of the things that may come to mind. In reality, much of the wear jewellery experiences comes from ordinary day-to-day life. The products we use, the hobbies we enjoy, and even some of our daily routines can gradually affect the appearance and condition of precious metals and gemstones. ## Household cleaning chemicals that can damage jewellery One of the biggest culprits is often found under the kitchen sink. Household cleaning products are designed to cut through grease, remove stains and disinfect surfaces, but some can be harsh on jewellery. Bleach, ammonia-based cleaners and other strong chemicals may affect precious metal alloys and certain gemstones. Rings are particularly vulnerable because they are usually the items people forget to remove before tackling a cleaning job. ### Can perfume, make-up and skincare products affect jewellery? Beauty products can also take their toll. You may have noticed a ring looking slightly dull after a few weeks of wear. The gym is another place where jewellery often suffers. Gripping weights, using resistance machines or taking part in sports can place considerable pressure on rings and bracelets. It is there to be worn and enjoyed. However, being aware of a few common risks can help keep favourite pieces looking their best for years to come. Taking jewellery off before cleaning, swimming, exercising or carrying out practical jobs is often a simple habit that can prevent unnecessary wear and reduce the likelihood of accidental damage.
