Now you just need to keep it hidden, plan the proposal and hope your partner doesn’t discover it first. But there’s another question worth considering: should you insure an engagement ring before you propose? You don’t necessarily have to wait until the ring is on your partner’s finger. In fact, arranging [engagement ring insurance](/jewellery/engagement-ring-insurance/) before the proposal can mean the ring is covered during the period between buying it and giving it to your partner. ## Can you insure an engagement ring before proposing? Yes. Depending on the insurer and its eligibility requirements, you may be able to insure an engagement ring as soon as you have bought or received it. This matters because cover won’t apply retrospectively to something that happened before the policy started. ### Why insure the ring before the proposal? An engagement ring can be at risk before the proposal just as it can afterwards. It could be stolen in a burglary or accidentally damaged. If you are planning a surprise proposal away from home, you may also be carrying a valuable piece of jewellery while travelling. Whether these events are covered will depend on the individual policy, so check the terms, conditions and exclusions carefully. And don't automatically assume your existing home insurance provides all the protection you need. Many contents insurance policies have a single-item limit, and valuable jewellery may need to be specifically listed. A holiday proposal brings another consideration: overseas cover. Standard travel insurance may not provide sufficient protection for an expensive engagement ring and high-value items such as jewellery are often excluded because they exceed a travel policy's single-article limit. If you're taking the ring abroad, check whether your jewellery insurance provides worldwide cover and whether there are conditions governing how the ring must be carried or stored. An insurance valuation can help establish an appropriate replacement value and provide a detailed record of the jewellery. This can be important if the item is subsequently lost or stolen. The amount you paid isn't necessarily the amount for which the ring should be insured. A discount or sale price, for example, may be lower than its full replacement cost. Tell your insurer about any relevant change in circumstances and check who should be named on the policy now that your partner has the ring and will be wearing it.
