Overview of Teruel - Teruel is a district in the Spanish province
of Aragon.
First mention in the 10th century it has a broad and diverse history
that can clearly be seen through its buildings and architecture.
As with Huesca, there is very little in the way of
Holiday home
ownership in this district. There is some
agriculture but very little else in the way of industry. The area has
something of a reputation for a fairly harsh climate producing some
extremes in temperature, in the winter months; temperatures can drop
to -20 degrees. Teruel is well known for producing some wonderful
hams. But apart from this it can best be described as a very
picturesque backwater.
Teruel is also the capital of the province It is located towards the
edge of the Maestrazgo mountainous area, which iit shares with Aragón
and Valencia.
It is a very mountainous area with a low population and is relatively
isolated from the rest of Spain. However, you can reach Valencia in
about 90 minutes.
If you avoid the extreme months of winter and summer, this province
can be a real gem to visit. It is very beautiful and you can often
walk for hours without seeing another person. However there
are local pressure groups though who are seeking extra investment in
the area to improve the infrastructure and as a result of this
transport links to the area have already improved. However that said
it remains the only provincial capital in Spain without a direct rail
link to Madrid, may be this will come in the not to distant future.
Teruel is also the name of the capital city and it has a population in
excess of 35000.. Fiestas in Teruel have also acquired a “must see"
reputation and the “la Vaquyilla del Angel during the second week of
July is most popular.
Historically, this has been an area of great turmoil, there has been
lots of fighting and the area was first captured by the Romans before
being reclaimed for Spain.
It has many important
buildings and some stunning
architecture, hermitages and sites of historical interest. The area
contains many fine examples of mudejar architecture and these
monuments have been declared a world heritage site.by UNESCO
