Travel Insurance - Travel Insurance is a relatively new insurance product which has been developed steadily in recent years to meet the changing needs of the holiday & business traveller. Polices are arranged in sections and are designed to cover most of the perils that can face a traveller whilst away from home. Some of the sections will over lap with a home insurance policy and its important to understand what is and is not covered. There are still a few polices on the market that will allow you to choose your own cover, but the vast majority will simply provide you with an all inclusive packages, where the sums insured and cover have been chosen for you. The sums insured will vary from section to section as will the policy excess applicable. They may even differ in the way that a claim is reported, so its important to study the policy document carefully.

The main sections will cover medical expenses, essential if you are travelling abroad and personal baggage cover, these two sections of the policy generate the majority of claims from travellers. Other sections of the policy will cover, cancellation & curtailment, travel delay, lost passport, holiday abandonment, hijack, loss of money, personal liability, personal accident. Most policies assume that you are travelling for holiday purposes, you can usually obtain an extension if you need to work abroad. The basic cover will usually exclude any form of hazardous activity whilst you are away such as, skiing, motorbike riding, water sports etc. If you intend to take part in any activities whilst away, its a good idea to check they will be covered. Some insurers will offer you the option of paying extra to have them included. You will also find that your insurers will want to know if you have any pre existing medical conditions, failure to disclose these when you request your quote may mean that you do not receive the cover you require. If you have a medical condition and you refer it to the insurance company, they even be able to include cover. If you do have a medical condition, you should always check with your doctor that it is safe to travel. If you are travelling within the European economic area, you should apply for a free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which offers you access to reduced-cost medical treatment.

If you buy your travel insurance from the United Kingdom, then the insurer will expect you to start and finish your travel in this country, if any medical repatriation has to be carried out, then you will be returned to the United Kingdom. Polices are available from a few days up to duration of 12 months and are rated depending on the part of the world that you are travelling to . If you buy a policy for annual travel, you will need to check the policy wording careful and is doesn't necessarily mean that you will be able to stay abroad and have the benefit of the policy for this amount of time. Most annual travel insurance contracts, will specify the maximum number of days you can be out of the country at anyone time. Remember, when you do travel always take a copy of your insurance policy with you, you may need this in an emergency and you will need the policy number and possibly the medical emergency telephone number.
