Family Websites - It is often difficult to use the Internet without soon running in to a page with dubious content, this is naturally a worry to all parents, but there are some steps you can take to help minimise the chances of your children viewing inappropriate content on your home computer. The term "family website", or "family safe website", is used to describe sites that are suitable for all members of the family to view, in particular children. This basically means, that parents can be safe in the knowledge that sites termed " family friendly", will contain no unsuitable material. These sites are becoming more popular especially with parents concerned, about the types of material available online, often without any forms of censorship.

There are a number of directories on the internet that contain details of family friendly sites, these directories are very carefully vetted, it is not possible to obtain a listing in one, unless you can meet the strict listing criteria and then only after a " human " editor" has reviewed your site. The range of sites they cover is fairly broad and there is usually something to cater for all tastes. Apart from family friendly directories, finding sites suitable for children can be problematic as it is not practical to sit and oversee your children whilst they are online, also part of the fun of the internet for children and part of the learning process, is making discoveries for themselves and learning how to source and piece together information. Often part of a child's home work will now include using the internet to research certain topics for a school project.

There are a number of proprietary based " internet filters" that you can purchase and these will screen and block web sites that you do not want your children to see. As well as these, most internet security systems will now include a content filtering system, to help insure, your children only see, what you want them to see, you can usually upgrade to these if not already included. These are fairly easy to use, you can mainly choose the settings yourself and select from a whole raft of topics that you do not want your children to see. If you child ends up on a page on the exclusion list, the filter will prevent the page from being displayed. This filtering may be easier and practical method of policing your children online, the internet is such a broad and vast place, that often in a few clicks, children can have travelled some distance from the original website viewed.
