Domestic Services - Domestic Services, usually refer to services performed in or around the home but not carried out by a family member. Domestic Service employees carry out a variety of tasks in and around the home, the types of tasks are numerous, and these can involve but are not limited to : cleaning, cooking, maintenance, gardening, baby sitting, looking after elderly relatives. Some work away from the home can also be included such as shopping and pet walking. In larger households, a domestic employee may live in with the family. Historically, domestic service, or the employment of persons for wages in their employer's residence, was sometimes simply called "service". Persons entered " service" as it provided them with a home, meals and to a certain extent security in an age when there was not too much legislation designed to protect this type of worker. If the property is a home, occupied by a family then the employee can be classed as a domestic employee and it is usual that the home insurance policy has an automatic extension to include employers liability insurance. Under the occupiers liability section of the policy, all sums for damages and claimants costs and expenses , for which the policy holder is liable at law in respect of : accidental bodily injury or disease will be covered up to the policy limit. It is always a good idea to make sure you have this section covered and if the employment you are offering includes any unusual tasks, or it is simply a person working at your home for business purposes, then you should check with the insurance company that cover is included. Employment can be on a full or part time basis for domestic services employees , depending on the family needs. Persons performing domestic duties in buildings that that are used for temporary accommodation such as Hotel & Guest Houses are usually classed as business employees. Domestic duties can also be carried out at business premises, larger hotels will have many persons employed on this type of duty as will hospitals & nursing homes.
