Construction, DIY & Home Improvement - when we construct, we build something by combining materials and parts. With regard to property, the word construction can relate to both the process of building a property including the method or more usually, it relates to the type of material used. Construction is a term of great importance to insurance companies as it is one of the primary methods of deciding what premium to charge for a policy of insurance. As well as helping to decide the actual premium charged the type of construction and materials used can decide the scope of the cover afforded by the policy.

Although it does vary from one insurer to another, in general most insurance companies have a definition of standard construction. - being built of Brick stone or concrete and roofed with slate tiles or metal. Some companies will extend this definition to included roofs that are covered with asphalt, but this is not generally accepted as standard construction. In the main, a building with a pitched roof is considered the norm, flat roofs are not considered to be of standard construction and should always be declared prior to cover being accepted. Anything other than " standard construction" may see certain restrictions placed under the contract wording. Insurance companies have statistics honed over periods of many years that show that property not constructed of certain materials may be more prone to claims. In some cases, it is possible to include cover for an additional premium ( reflected by the increased risk). In other cases, even with an additional premium it is not possible obtain cover. Thatched Buildings are a particularly good example, almost all insurance companies , decline to offer cover for these buildings. Compared with the total number of " normal" building, there are relatively few properties of this type, statistics shows they produce a higher proportion of claims coupled with the amount of loss involved also being above average.
